Competition Structure

urbanSHED is a two-stage design competition:

Stage I:

  • Competitors will submit their concept ideas.
  • The urbanSHED Jury will select up to three outstanding designs and may choose to award honorable mentions.
  • urbanSHED will provide a $5,000 stipend to support the finalists' Stage II participation.

Stage II:

  • Our Technical Advisory Group of leading design experts and construction industry stakeholders will make recommendations and provide critiques to Stage II finalists midway through the projects' progress.
  • The urbanSHED Jury will select a grand prize winner.
  • The winner will receive a $10,000 award and may participate in promotion of the competition's results.
  • As part of the Re-Construction Art Program, the Downtown Alliance intends to facilitate the construction of a full-scale prototype of the winning entry in Lower Manhattan.
  • The NYC Buildings Department plans to issue an OTCR (Office of Technical Certification and Research) Bulletin establishing the winning sidewalk shed design as an approved standard that can be used by industry throughout the City.
